RUMANA: POLITICS TRUMPS REAL SAVINGS
FOR NEW JERSEY’S RATEPAYERS AND TAXPAYERS
Assembly Republican Whip Scott T. Rumana, R-Passaic, Bergen, Essex and Morris, said today’s approval by the General Assembly on legislation giving the Legislature the power to veto minutes of the Port Authority, along with New York’s Legislature (A-2166), does nothing to provide real saving for New Jersey’s ratepayers and taxpayers.
Rumana offered an amendment to the Democrat-sponsored bill during Monday’s voting session that is almost identical to good government legislation (A-1921) he introduced in January that improves transparency and accountability of regional authorities in New Jersey. The amendment was tabled along a party line vote.
“Good government reform is about taking meaningful steps to improve oversight and transparency that will save taxpayers and ratepayers real money, whether it involves authorities, commissions or other shadow governments, at any level,” said Rumana. “The most transparent thing about the Democrat’s bill is its intention to take power away from Governor Christie, Governor Cuomo and future governors. There is no chance this bill will be signed into law in either New Jersey or New York.”
Rumana’s legislation, which is co-sponsored by his Republican colleagues Mary Pat Angelini, R-Monmouth, and Donna Simon, R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer and Middlesex, was referred to the Assembly State Government Committee and has yet to be heard.
