Wisniewski Statement on 9th Circuit Court Ruling on Prop 8

Referendum on the Rights of the Minority is not the Proper Path

(Trenton) – New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Wisniewski and Marriage Equality legislation sponsor in the New Jersey General Assembly issued the following statement regarding the 9th Circuit Court ruling about California’s Prop 8:

"Constitutional rights should not be subject to a popularity contest and the 9th Circuit Court affirmed that principle by overturning Proposition 8 in California.

The New Jersey Legislature and our Governor now face the same question -- will we provide marriage equality to our residents, which our own Supreme Court has ruled is their constitutional right. Let us accept our responsibility and right this injustice now. "
