TRENTON – A little history about referendums was placed before the Senate Judiciary Committee today in response to those who believe same-sex marriage equality should be put to a popular vote.

Former State Public Advocate Ronald Chen testified about a 1915 referendum on women’s suffrage in New Jersey.

The result: The voters rejected the question 184,390 to 133,282.

Ocean was the lone county to support the measure: 1,450 to 1,293.

Gov. Christie today called for putting the issue of marriage equality before the voters, but Senate President Steve Sweeney quickly shot that idea down, saying that civil rights cannot be subject to popular vote.
